About Great Callings: What's Keeping You? by Brianna Wiest

Most books about creative work teach you how to do it. This one asks why you haven't started yet.

The point is not to "make it," the point is to be made by it. To walk toward the fire and find yourself forged. To say: this is what I saw when I was alive.

Great Callings is Wiest's most focused book — written specifically for people who carry a sense of creative purpose they haven't yet fully answered. Where The Mountain Is You confronts self-sabotage in life broadly, and The Pivot Year offers daily language for becoming, Great Callings speaks directly to the person who knows they are meant to build, write, create, or lead something — and is still finding reasons to wait.

Wiest names the barriers precisely: fear of being seen, resistance disguised as preparation, the need for external validation before beginning, distraction as avoidance, and the inherited belief that suffering or struggle must precede worthwhile work. Then she reframes each one — not as evidence that you aren't ready, but as an invitation to go deeper into your clarity and resilience. Drawing on some of the greatest artists and thinkers in history, she makes the case that your calling is not waiting for you to become worthy of it. It has simply been waiting for you to stop preparing and start living it.

Readers describe the writing as poetic and contemplative — longer and more meditative in form than The Pivot Year, best read slowly and returned to over time. It has found a particular home among writers, designers, entrepreneurs, coaches, and anyone building something they believe in and can't quite explain why it matters so much to them.
