'As someone who fell off a chair not long ago trying to hear what they were saying at the next table in a restaurant, I suppose I am obsessively interested in what some might consider the trivia of other people's lives.'

Maeve Binchy is well known for her bestselling novels, but for many years Maeve was a journalist. From 'The Student Train' to 'Plane Bores' and 'Bathroom Joggers' to 'When Beckett met Binchy', these articles have all the warmth, wit and humanity of her fiction. Arranged in decades, from the 1960s to the 2000s, and including Maeve's first and last ever piece of writing for the Irish Times, the columns also give a fascinating insight into the author herself.

With an introduction written by her husband, the writer Gordon Snell, this collection of timeless writing reminds us of why the leading Irish writer was so universally loved.

About the Author:

Maeve Binchy was the literary equivalent of a big, comforting hug. Born in Dublin, Ireland in 1940, Maeve had a magical way of turning everyday lives into extraordinary stories that made readers feel right at home—like they were sitting by the fire, tea in hand, listening to an old friend spill the best kind of secrets.

Before becoming a beloved novelist, Maeve was a teacher and a journalist (she once reported from Israel using a typewriter and carbon paper—iconic). Her first book, Light a Penny Candle, lit the way for a career full of bestselling novels that captured the heart and soul of Irish life, love, and friendship. Her writing was rich with lovable characters, small-town drama, big feelings, and just the right amount of wit.

Books like Circle of Friends, Tara Road, and Evening Class didn’t just entertain—they wrapped readers in a world so real you’d swear you’d met the characters in the local shop. She didn’t need high-speed car chases or masked villains—her drama lived in family kitchens, whispered confessions, and long-standing feuds that could only happen in a tight-knit community.

Maeve Binchy made the ordinary feel extraordinary. Her books are the kind you finish with a smile, a tear, and a sudden urge to call your oldest friend.
