After 1902, De la Rey, hero of the Anglo-Boer war, accepted peace but never embraced British imperialism. He became a Senator in the Union of South Africa, representing Afrikaner interests. He believed Afrikaners should rebuild through unity and dignity, not endless war. He opposed violent rebellion but also opposed fighting for Britain. This moral tension defines him. In 1914, Afrikaner mystic Siener van Rensburg prophesied that De la Rey would “lead the people again.” This fed rumours he would head an uprising against South Africa’s participation in WWI. De la Rey himself was ambiguous – seeking dialogue, not insurrection. His death at the roadblock was officially ruled accidental, but was widely believed by Afrikaners to be symbolic, if not political. Turned him into a martyr figure, even though he never called for rebellion. Within weeks, the Maritz Rebellion erupted.
